An extremely rare George III Parcel Gilt Rattle and Teether made in London in 1791 by Walter Tweedie.

The Rattle has a baluster shaft and two rows of five bells. The main shaft is decorated with bright cut floral and foliate sprays. The lower section displays very unusual swirling engraved prick dot and bright cut bands. The long coral is attached to the main body with a scalloped section. The baluster whistle is beautifully decorated and displays a vacant oval gilded cartouche. The whistle is very well marked with WT for Walter Tweedie and the full set of hallmarks appear in the usual location, where the coral is attached. This piece is of a larger than usual size and is in outstanding condition. Parcel gilding is where the whole surface is gilded and then patterns are engraved to remove some of the gilding, so that the silver colour is shown against the gilding, which creates a two colour pattern. A similar example is shown in Coral, Whistles & Bells, by Dr Alexander Briggs, Page 64, Plate 88.
