The Snuff Box is of deep navette form and is decorated with bright cut borders. This rare piece has two diagonal flush hinged covers and a diagonal hinge. The interiors are deeply gilded and well marked. Double compartment snuff boxes are very rare, as it would have been the wealthiest of individuals who would have been able to afford two different kinds of snuff. Phipps and Robinson were the premier box maker's in London at this date and made unusual, innovative, designs. This is a very rare example of their work.
