This example is of an unusually large size and may well have been used for conserves on the breakfast table. It is of the finest quality and heavy weight and is modelled in the unusual panelled melon form and stands on a platform base with scroll feet, all decorated with Rococo shells. The main body is divided into panels by vertical lobes which are decorated with entwined exotic floral sprigs on a matted ground. The everted rim is decorated with trailing flowers and scrolls and the domed hinged cover is also chased with foliate designs and terminates in a writhen finial. The scroll handle is capped with flower heads and trailing foliage. The Mustard Pot is in quite excellent condition and is fully marked on the base and on the underside of the cover. This is the first time we have seen this design and size of Mustard Pot which is no surprise once you see it was made by J.E. Terrey. He was working very much in the circle of Paul Storr and had workshops at 31, Hatton Garden when this piece was made.
