This exceptional piece is narrow rectangular in form with cut corners. The base is engraved with a sunburst design around a central flower head. The sides are engraved with floral designs, prick dot bands and raying flower heads. The hinged cover also displays beautiful raying flower heads and a prick dot panel engraved with an oval and a central cut cornered cartouche engraved with a contemporary Crest, The engraving is in excellent, original, condition and the interior displays its original mirror and velvet lining. Samuel Pemberton made very fine toothpick cases and a similar example is shown in "Silver Boxes" by Eric Delieb, page 86, Plate 126, an example of which is attached. The box displays a full crisp set of hallmarks. The base displays the maker's mark, duty mark and sterling mark and the rim of the cover displays the maker's mark, Birmingham town mark and date letter for 1795.
