This exceptional Basket shows the work of William Plummer at its best.  This example stands on a flared oval foot, decorated with beading and pierced with vertical pails, roundels and Neo Classical urns in ovals.  The rim is decorated with shaped beaded bands and Classical medallions, above a wide pierced and engraved section displaying trailing floral motifs, Classical urns and flower heads.  The bowl also displays raised, and very unusual, raying flower heads, the first time we have seen this design.  The centre of the bowl is engraved with a contemporary Armorial, with ribbons above and crossed branches below, all surrounded by an oval beaded cartouche.  The beautiful arched handle is pierced with vertical pails and displays a beaded border and raised oval flower heads. It is attached to the main body with acanthus mouldings.   The basket is in excellent condition and is very well marked either side of the handle mouldings.

This is the first time we have seen this design from the Plummer workshops, which looks beautiful on a wooden table.  William Plummer was a specialist pierced worker, who had a long career and made some of the finest baskets of this date.
