The Mustard Pot is modelled in an unusual rectangular form, with incuse corners.  The base and rim display reeded mouldings and the sides are engraved with upper and lower prick dot bands and arrow head motifs enclosing floral garlands, with tassels to the sides.  The main body is also engraved, on both sides, with a circular bright cut cartouche containing contemporary script initials.  The slightly domed, panelled, cover terminates in a ball finial and is decorated with a bright cut outer border.  This piece also has a reeded “S” scroll handle and displays a stylised “Prince of Wales Feathers” thumbpiece.  The Mustard Pot is in excellent condition and has a blue glass liner.  The base displays a full set of hallmarks and the underside of the cover, the sterling mark.  John Whittingham was a small worker who produced wine labels and small pieces of table silver in innovative designs.  His pieces display quality of design and production and are always finely executed.
