The Cruet has a rectangular openwork frame and stands on four scroll feet decorated with flat fluting.  The top displays a vase shaped salt cellar with arched handle, reeded borders and gilded interior.  The two, removable, egg cups are also of Classical vase shaped form and are decorated with reeded bands.  They both have gilded interiors to protect the silver.  This piece is in excellent condition and is fully marked on the frame and the two egg cups.  This is the first time we have seen an egg cruet for two people, as the frames usually hold four or six cups.  John Emes was a very fine and prolific silversmith who specialised in elegant Classical designs, of fine finish, often decorated with reeding.  He was apprentice to William Woollett of Green Street, Leicester Fields,  He entered his first mark in 1796, in partnership with Henry Chawner and had workshops in Amen Corner, when this fine piece was made.
