A very fine & unusual set of four George III Octagonal Candlesticks made by Daniel Smith & Robert Sharp and assayed in Sheffield in 1782.
The Candlesticks are modelled in an unusual octagonal form and the stepped bases are decorated with beading and rise to a flat fluted well, also decorated with foliate motifs. The Tapering stems and sockets are also decorated with flat fluting and beading, in addition to drapery swags. The pull-off nozzles display a beaded rim and are engraved with a contemporary Crest, which is repeated on the base. The candlesticks are loaded with mahogany and are fully marked on the base and with the maker's mark and sterling mark on the nozzles. This is a most unusual Classical design to find at this date and all pieces are in excellent condition. Smith & Sharp were some of the finest maker's working at this date and, although working in London, assayed some of their pieces in Sheffield. This place had a reputation for producing unusual Neo Classical designs during this period.Height: 11.25 inches, 28.13cm.Base Diameter: 5.25 inches, 13.13 cm.
