The Rattle is palely gilded and is modelled in a slightly unusual smaller size. The main shaft is baluster in form and displays an unusual band of foliate motifs around the centre, in addition to bands of ribbing, herring bone and bead decoration. The rattle has a scallopped shaped end, to which its original coral is attached. The rattle is in excellent condition and has six original bells, each marked with the sterling mark, and a susponsory ring. The whistle displays a good maker's mark and the remainder of the hallmarks are struck on the section where the coral is attached. Mary Anne Croswell was a specialist rattle maker.
