A very fine and rare George III Neo Classical Tea Vase/Caddy made in London in 1774 by Peter Gillois.

This very rare piece stands on a stepped square pedestal foot. The vase shaped main body is decorated with a lower band of acanthus spears and the upper section with laurel garlands, tied with ribbons and interspersed with oval medallions, a design attributed to the Royal Architect, Sir William Chambers. The sides, also display finely detailed lion mask mouldings, with circular suspensory rings. The shaped domed pull off cover is also decorated with acanthus spears and terminates in an acorn finial. The front of the main body also, unusually displays a cast and applied family Crest, as used by the Willoughby family. The vase is in excellent condition and is fully marked in the foot and with the Sterling Mark on the cover.
Peter Gillois was a specialist Tea Caddy maker of exceptional quality. He was of Huguenot descent and had workshops in Wardour Street when this Caddy was made - a very rare and desirable piece.
