This exceptional case is of a narrow rectangular form, with rounded ends. The cover, sides and base are profusely engraved with pluming scrolls, flower heads and trellis work. The protruding scroll thumb piece is inset with an emerald, flanked by two rubies. The interior of the cover is inset with its original mirror. This piece is in excellent, crisp, condition and the engraving has been executed to the finest standard. Although unmarked, it may well have come from the workshops of Charles Rawlings, a superior maker of boxes, who frequently decorated his work in this manner.
