The Candlesticks were made in Sheffield in 1793 by John Parsons and Company, a silversmith who had a reputation for producing very fine Candlesticks and Candelabra of Classical design at the end of the Eighteenth century. As you will see from the image, the Candlesticks stand on a circular base which is decorated with reeding, as well as swirling foliate designs. The stem and tulip shaped sockets are also decorated with these unusual foliate designs, which were popular on Sheffield Candlesticks at this date. The Candlesticks have plain reeded detachable nozzles and are engraved with a Coat of Arms on the base. These examples are marked on the base, and on each of the detachable nozzles. The central stem is loaded with mahogany, always a sign of quality of design and production. The Coat of Arms are those of the Batten family of Uperne, County Dorset, descendants of Sir Francis Drake.
