The shells have typical gilded scallop shell shaped main bodies with an unusual cast scroll back which curves over into the main body. This scroll section is decorated with Rococo shell details and displays a cartouche engraved with a contemporary Crest. Both pieces stand on three cast lion paw feet with textured surface to simulate the fur of the lion. This is a most unusual design of shell, especially standing on such feet. Both are in excellent condition, are well marked on the base and are also engraved on the underside with the same Crest which is seen on the top. The Crest is that as used by the Erskine family of Scotland.
Charles Fox II was a very fine silversmith. His work shows consistently high quality and he is considered the last individualist silversmith before the debacle of Victorian mass production.
