The Tray has a waisted form with wavy rim decorated with applied beading.  The sides are also most unusually pierced with urns in ovals, interspersed with Herring bone garlands.  The ends are also pierced with larger classical urns, with ribbons above and scroll work below.  The piercing and engraving has been executed to a very high standard.  The centre is engraved a contemporary Crest within an oval cartouche, flanked by crossed branches and with ribbons above.  This piece is a very unusual design in excellent condition and with a crisp set of marks on the underside.  The underside also shows its original assay slither and measuring points, which is always a sign of quality of production.

William Plummer was a prolific maker during this period who specialised in the production of baskets and other pierced items.  As you will see this would be ideal for serving Julia's favourite chocolates after dinner.
