These rare pieces stand on a stepped square base, with incuse corners, which rises to a raised circular central section and sunken well. The short baluster stems are unusually panelled with eight sides. Each is fully marked in the foot and the base is engraved with a contemporary Crest. Both are in exceptionally fine condition and have an outstanding colour. A similar pair, by the same maker, are contained within the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Joseph Bird was an important silversmith who specialised in the production of candlesticks. His first mark was entered in 1697, with workshops in Foster Lane and he was still working when he died in 1735. Two of the most important candlestick makers of the mid eighteenth century, James Gould & John Cafe, were also apprenticed to hime, which says something fro his high reputation.
Height: 3.6 inches.
Base Diameter: 3.1 inches.
13oz the pair.
