The Butter Shells stand on two cone feet and have deep scallop shell bodies.  The carrying handles have a wavy edge and are engraved with a contemporary Crest below the Coronet of a Viscount.  Each is very well marked on the reverse, in addition to being engraved with their original scratch weight.  The shells are of a good weight and gauge and are in excellent condition.  Edward Wakelin was a superior silversmith who was apprenticed to John Le Sage.  He took over the workshops of the highly important silversmith, George Wickes, in Panton Street, near Haymarket, and entered his first mark in November 1747.

Length: 5.1 inches, 12.75 cm.
