The Tankard has slightly tapering sides and stands on a spreading cast foot which is decorated with reeding. The stepped domed cover is also decorated with reeding and displays an attractive cast corkscrew thumb piece. The plain S scroll handle has applied decoration at the top near to the hinge. The front of the main body is most beautifully engraved with an unusual contemporary inscription in typical script lettering of that date:
The Gift of the Owners of the Success to William Draper, 1725
The Success was almost certainly the name of a ship. The Tankard is fully marked on the side of the main body, in the cover, and with the makers mark on the handle. The Tankard is of a very good weight and is in excellent condition.
