An exceptional & very rare George III Rococo Revival Coffee Pot made in Dublin in 1774 by Matthew West.

The Coffee Pot is of a large size and stands on a stepped circular foot decorated with swirling foliate motifs. The main baluster shaped body is decorated with a wide lower band of undulating lobing and is profusely chased with drapery swags and foliate sprigs. The front displays a most unusual Chinoiserie figure pointing into the distance above a Rococo style, shell and scroll cartouche, engraved with a contemporary crowned lion rampany Crest. The reverse is also decorated in the same manner as the front, however the back displays a Neo Classical bearded mask roundel, being held in place by a male figure from Antiquity. The domed, hinged, cover is embellished with Classical drapes and terminates in an acanthus and pine cone finial. The cast, scroll, spout is part fluted and decorated with leaf capping. The fruitwood scroll handle is attached to the main body with drapery and shell detail mouldings.
This is an exceptionally unusual design of Coffee Pot, to find from Ireland, and is in excellent condition. The Coffee Pot is well marked on both the cover and the main body.
Matthew West was a very important silversmith working from premises in Werburgh Street, Dublin, when this Coffee Pot was made. He was elected Warden of the Goldsmith's Company 1780-3 and attained the prestigious position of Master 1783-4.
