HESTER BATEMAN. A very rare rare George III Caddy Spoon made in London in 1784 by Hester Bateman.

Sold

This very rare spoon has a deep shell bowl and shallow crescent handle engraved with bright cut and prick dot designs in addition to a central raying flower head.  This example is in excellent condition and is very well marked on the reverse.  A similar example is shown in "Caddy Spoons" by Captain John Norie, Plate 17, Fig G.

Hester Bateman is considered the most important of all the Georgian Lady Silversmiths and had large workshops in Bun Hill Row.  Caddy Spoons are rare by her and they would have been made to go inside her beautiful tea caddies.
