The Tea Caddy is oval in form with a flat hinged cover. The sides and cover are engraved with a band of prick dot and bright cut designs and simulated flower heads. The front and the reverse of the main body display an oval bright cut cartouche which is engraved on the front with a contemporary Crest, and which is vacant on the reverse. Both cartouche are decorated with prick dot ribbons above. The cover terminates in a cast Neo-Classical urn finial decorated with prick dot designs. The Caddy is fully marked on the base and with the makers mark and sterling mark on the cover
The Crest in heraldic terms is Out of a Ducal Coronet, a plume of five feathers. The Crest is that as used by Sir Edward Astley 4th Baronet, M.P. for Norfolk 1768-90. In 1759 he married Rhoda, eldest surviving daughter of Francis Blake Delaval of Seaton Delaval, Northumberland and sister of John, Lord Delaval. Rhoda died in 1757 and he married secondly, in 1759, Anne youngest daughter of Christopher Milles of Nackington, Kent. Anne died in 1792 and he then married thirdly Elizabeth Bullen. Sir Edward died on 27th March, 1802 and was succeeded by his eldest son, Sir Jacob Henry Astley, the 5th Baronet. His principal Seat was Melton Constable Hall in Norfolk.
