The Admiral Lord Nelson Vinaigrette is one of the most important, and desirable, Vinaigrettes to be found. The example we offer for sale is broad rectangular in form and the hinged cover is engraved with a very detailed portrait of the Admiral Lord Nelson in Naval uniform surrounded by an oval banner engraved with "ENGLAND EXPECTS EVERYMAN WILL DO HIS DUTY.", all surrounded by a linear frame and prick dot panel. The sides and base are engraved with prick dot bands and the base is centred with a raying floral motif. The interior displays fine gilding and a very rare die stamped grille pierced with a view of Nelson's flagship, HMS Victory, and the date of the Battle of Trafalgar, Oct 21 1805. The Vinaigrette is in excellent condition and those which were made in the year of his death, 1805, are the most desirable. After Nelson's death there was a huge out pouring of grief for our national hero. A very small number of memento mori items were produced for the upper end of society to purchase, and the "Nelson" Vinaigrette was one such example. It is also most unusual to find a broad rectangular Nelson Vinaigrette, as they are usually half the size. This type were represented in both the Albert and Lion collection of boxes, however they seldom appear on the market.
