The box is unusually made of blond tortoiseshell and modelled in a very rare Neo Classical shield/cartouche form. The cover is hinged and is inset with bands of darker tortoiseshell, within gold rope work borders. The centre displays a bright cut cartouche, echoing the shape of the box, which is engraved with a set of contemporary script initials. The darker tortoiseshell bands are also inset with gold roundels and stylised floral motifs. The case has plain blonde sides and base, and is in quite exceptional condition.
