The bowl is slightly more flared than usual and is decorated at the base with a triple reeded band.  The ferrule is also decorated  with reeding and this example has a turned fruitwood handle.  The front of the bowl is engraved with a contemporary Crest.  The exterior of the bowl displays a full set of marks and the interior clapper a sterling mark.  The bell is in quite excellent condition.

In heraldic terms the Crests are "out of a ducal coronet a donkey's head" and "a lion's head erased" for the Mainwaring and Kynaston families.  In 1780 the Kynaston's of Oteley Park, Shropshire died out in the male line and Mary inherited the estate and married James Mainwaring of Bromborough Cheshire.  Their grandson Charles Kynaston Mainwaring (1803-1861) inherited the estate in 1832 and this bell would have been made for use at Otley Park.  An image of the house is shown.

Height: 4.5 inches, 11.25 cm.

Diameter of the base: 2.5 inches.

Weight: 5oz.
