The Salts cellars are cast and are modelled in a design by Paul De Lamerie, which was popular during the George II period. Each stands on a stepped circular foot which is decorated with a swirling corded band. The circular main body is decorated with acanthus spears and the side also displays a Baron's Coronet, above an engraved mirror cipher. The interior is finely gilded and each base displays a crisp set of hallmarks, as well as GARRARDS, Panton Street, London. The quality of these pieces is outstanding, as is the heavy weight. Robert Garrard displays a crown above his maker's mark, denoting his appointment as the Royal silversmith. It was Queen Victoria who would appoint the firm to the prestigious position of Crown Jeweller.
