The Dish is of shaped circular form and stands on four paw feet with acanthus mouldings, where they are attached to the main body. The reed and foliate handles are also attached to the sides with similar mouldings. This piece unusually has a sterling silver removable liner. The Dish is in excellent condition and is also engraved with a contemporary Crest, on both sides, below the Coronet of an Earl.
The Crest and Coronet are those of King, below the Coronet of an Earl. They are specifically those of William King, later King-Noel, First Earl of Lovelace. He had succeeded his father as 8th Lord King, Baron of Ockham, in 1833 and was subsequently created 1st Earl of Lovelace and Viscount Ockham in 1838. He was born in 1805 and was educated at Eton and Trinity College Cambridge. He married first, in 1835, the Hon Augusta Ada Byron, only legitimate issue of the poet George Gordon, Lord Byron. She is remembered today as one of the great pioneers of computing and she was a mathematician of great ability. She also supported Charles Babbage in his work on his "Difference Engine". She died in 1852 and was buried, at her own request, next to her father. They had four children. He married secondly in 1865, Jane Crawford, widow of Edward Jenkins. He died in 1893.
