The Jug is an exact miniature of the larger water/wine ewers and stands on a square pedestal foot, with circular beaded band and bright cut engraved designs.  The vase shaped main body rises to a beaded rim and is also engraved with beautiful bright cut bands, foliate scrolls and floral garlands.  The front displays a shield shaped Armorial, with Crest above, all contained within an oval bright cut frame.  The slender, elegant, neck rises to a beaded rim and also displays bright cut and prick dot bands.  The domed, hinged, cover terminates in a perfectly made Neo Classical urn finial and the high scroll beaded handle is decorated with bold beading and is attached at the top with finely detailed acanthus foliate mouldings.  The Jug is in most excellent condition and is fully marked in the foot including the incuse duty mark, only seen in 1784 and 1785.  This is where the King's head is seen in a cut cornered punch.  The underside of the cover is also marked with the maker's mark and sterling mark.  The Arms are those of the Gilpin family, specifically for the Reverend William Gilpin.
