The Basket stands on a stepped domed foot, which is decorated with beading and is pierced with scrolls and teardrop motifs.  The piercing is then decorated with drapery swags interspersed with oval medallions.  The vase shaped main body, also has a beaded rim and is unusually pierced with an eclectic mix of vertical pails, roundels and diamond motifs.  The piercing is also decorated with drapery swags, also interspersed with Classical medallions and the bottom of the main body displays a band of acanthus spears.  The arched handle is decorated with pretty entwined bands and this piece has a blue glass liner.  Most unusually, is that the front displays a Tassie Mythological Medallion depicting a Goddess from Antiquity, seated on a throne with headdress/crown and holding a spear, all contained within an oval frame.  These medallions were influenced by the small cameo like medallions based on the Tassie paste gems popular in England at this time.  They are very occasionally seen on the work of the silversmith Andrew Fogelberg, Master of the great Paul Storr, however here we see Hester Bateman using the medallions.  The reverse displays an oval frame cartouche which is engraved with the contemporary script initials "JL" surrounded by trailing floral sprays.  This piece is in excellent condition and is very well marked on either side just under the handle moulding.

Height, to the rim: 3.65 inches, 9.13 cm.

Diameter at the rim: 3 inches, 7.5 cm.
