Sold

The main body stands on an applied spreading foot and is baluster in form with an everted rim.  The lower section is decorated with lobed designs below a beaded girdle.  This design is a copy of the decoration seen on the rare Scottish Thistle Cups.  This piece has two plain "S" scroll handles and is fully marked on the side of the main body.  This piece is of the finest quality and is of a very good gauge of silver.

As you will appreciate Porringers are uncommon from Ireland,  however to find one modelled with thistle cup decoration, is exceptionally rare.  The Irish tended to make the two handled loving cups.  Matthew West was a fine prolific silversmith in Dublin during the last quarter of the 18th century.  He had workshops in Skinner Row, Dublin, when this piece was made.  He was an important figure in the silver World, as he occupied the position of Master of the Goldsmiths Company 1783-84.

Height: 4 inches, 10 cm.

Length, handle to handle: 7.1 inches, 17.75 cm.
