An exceptionally rare George IV Table Pedlar Snuff Box - The Man with a Hambone. Made in Birmingham in 1829 by Edward Smith.

The Snuff Box we refer to is one of the rarest of the Pedlar series and depicts The Man with a Hambone. The cover displays a very detailed pedlar, in period costume, holding a wine jug under one arm as well as a hambone and knife in the other. The scene is in raised high relief and is inspired by an etching after the 17th century Dutch artist Gerrit van Honthorst (1592-1656), entitled the Man with a Hambone. An example of the etching is held in the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle. The cover is in very crisp condition and the sides are decorated with reeding. The base is decorated with engine turning around a vacant rectangular cartouche. The interior is very well marked and displays exceptional interior gilding.
