The Dishes are modelled in the shaped oval form with a raised rim decorated with bold gadrooning.  The border is engraved on each side with a contemporary shield shaped coat of arms.  The dishes are of a good size and are in excellent condition, with crisp marks.  The quality of these pieces is not surprising as they were made by John Houle, who was apprentice to the greatest British Silversmith of all time, this being Paul Storr.  He had workshops at 24, Red Lion Street, Clerkenwell when these dishes were made.  The Armorial is that of the Bethell family impaling the Chaloner family.  Anna Maria Chaloner (1780-1861) married William John Bethell in 1799.
