The Candlesticks are cast and stand on a very unusual stepped base decorated with gadrooning. The plain circular shaft is decorated, on the lower section, with an unusual wide lobed band and meets the base with a sunken square well. The column is modelled at the top in the Ionic order of architecture, which is very rarely seen on candlesticks. The pull-off nozzles are decorated with a gadrooned edge and the front of the base is engraved with a contemporary Armorial surrounded by a blue bell drop cartouche. The Candlesticks are fully marked on the base and with the makers mark and sterling mark on the nozzles. John Carter II was an exceptional maker of Candlesticks and Salvers, very often of innovative designs. The Arms are those of Butler of Sudeley and an image of Sudeley Castle is shown.
