The Dishes are circular in form with slightly baluster bases decorated with a gadrooned rim. Each base displays two unusual drop carrying handles, rectangular in form with cut corners. The stepped high domed covers are decorated with an unusual band of lobing and terminate in a leaf capped cross branch finial with gadrooned circular plate below. Both the base and cover are engraved with a contemporary Armorial with a Bishops Mitre above. The Dishes are fully marked in the bases and with the makers mark, sterling mark and date letter on the covers. All of the handles are marked with the Sterling mark and the bases display original interior hammer marks.

The Arms are those of the See of London, impaling Howley, for William Howley, 1766-1848. He was educated at Winchester and New College Oxford, MA 1791, DD 1805, Fellow and Tutor. He was Vicar of Andover in 1802, Rector of Bradford Peverell 1811, Canon of Christ Church Oxford 1804, Regius Professor of Divinity Oxford 1809-1813. He was appointed Bishop of London, 1813-1823, so these Dishes may well have been purchased to celebrate this. He supported the Bill of Pains and Penalties against Queen Caroline in 1820. He was translated to the See of Canterbury in 1828 and served as Archbishop of Canterbury from 1828 until his death in 1848.
