This piece is modelled in a very unusual “Tub” form with straight sides decorated with horizontal bands of gadrooning. The size rise to a similarly decorated rim and the arched swing handle has gadrooned borders. The centre of the bowl is engraved with a contemporary shield shaped Armorial surrounded by a blue bell and foliate scroll cartouche. This basket is in excellent condition and is fully marked on the underside of the main body and with the maker’s mark on the handle. The Armorial is that of the Moore family..
Charles Aldridge & Green were very fine makers of baskets, however this is the only time we have seen this design which leads us to think that it may well have been a special commission. They had workshops at 62, St. Martin’s Le Grand when this piece was made.
