A very rare "Friendship" Vinaigrette made in Birmingham in 1816 by Samuel Pemberton.

This rare Vinaigrette is one from a series of love and friendship vinaigrettes which were produced by Samuel Pemberton during the second decade of the 19th century. Only a few were produced and examples seldom appear on the market. As you will see from the images, the box has a slender, wide, rectangular form. The base displays an engine turned panel and the sides two bands of twisted rope work. The cover displays the word " L'Amitie - Friendship" in raised lettering on a matted ground. This is all surrounded by a frame of raised trailing vines and fruit. The cover opens up to reveal a very fine gilded interior and grille pierced and engraved with a floral spray surrounded by a rectangular foliate band. The Vinaigrette is in exceptional condition and displays a crisp, full, set of marks in the base. Another example, from this series, is shown in "Silver Boxes" by Eric Delieb on page 148. This being a love token and displaying "L'Amour" on the cover surrounded by a similar frame. The extract from the book is shown.
