This very fine example is broad rectangular in form and the sides and base are decorated with crisp engine turned decoration. The cover displays a very unusual and detailed panel, in relief, depicting a predatory lion and large eagle, with wings outstretched, catching and lifting a coiled serpent all in a jungle type background. As intimated, the scene is finely detailed and is contained within a reed and tie frame, with Rococo shells in each corner. The box also has a detailed cast thumb piece depicting floral and foliate sprays. The interior is well marked and displays deep, original, gilding. The work of John Jones III is exceptionally fine and distinctive, however his output was small and very few examples survive. An example from his workshops is shown in “Silver Boxes” by Eric Delieb, page 48. A very scarce and desirable box. The exterior decoration is in very crisp condition, indicating that this piece has seen little use. It is also of a very good weight.
