A very fine George IV "Book" Vinaigrette made in London in 1828 by Benoni Stephens.

£1,450

The Vinaigrette is finely and realistically modelled as a book with engine turned cover and base, within a reeded frame.  The side is ribbed and engraved to simulate the spine of the book and the other three sides engraved with linear designs to simulate the pages.  The box opens up to reveal a finely gilded interior and a beautiful grille pierced and engraved with pluming foliate scrolls and raying flowerheads.  The pierced section is all surrounded by a herring bone engraved frame.  The box is in quite excellent crisp condition and is very well marked on the underside of the cover and in the base.  The underside of the grille is also marked with the sterling mark and date letter.

Benoni Stephens is a scarce maker, however he did make boxes of the finest quality.  He had workshops at 19, Myrtle Street, when this piece was made.
