This piece stands on four cast claw and ball feet and displays an attractive raised shaped beaded border interspersed with foliate motifs. The centre is beautifully engraved not only with the Crest of Medlycott, but also the full Coat of Arms and the Motto " DAT CURA QUIETEM - Prudence Gives Rest " engraved on a banner below. The Armorial and Crest is surrounded by a cartouche of Neo Classical garlands, scrolls and paterae. The engraving has been executed to the finest standard. The Arms, Crest and Motto are those as used by Thomas Medlycott of Ven House, M.P. for Milborne Port. He married Jane, only daughter of William Coles of Salisbury and had issue:
1. Sir William Coles Medlycott, 1st Baronet
2 Thomas Mervyn, Lieut. Inniskilling Dragoons
3 Jane Paget.
Thomas Medlycott died on 15th May, 1795 and was survived by his eldest son, William Coles Medlycott of Ven House, who was to be elevated in the Peerage to the 1st Baronet.
This very fine piece is in excellent condition, with a fine patina, and is of a very good weight. It is very well marked and it also displays its original assay scrape on the reverse, from when it was hallmarked. Considering its size, it has a height of 1.5 inches and a diameter of 13.5 inches. With reference to its weight, it weighs a very good 42oz.
