A very fine George III Coopered Drinking Beaker made in London in 1774 by John Chapman II

This piece was made in London in 1774 by John Chapman II and the design, unusually, simulates the form of a barrel with wide horizontal reeded bands intended to be the iron hoops holding the wooden staves together. This example is of a very thick gauge of silver and has a finely gilded interior, always a sign of quality. The front is engraved with a shield shaped Armorial and the base displays a crisp set of hallmarks. The Arms are those of Benet, of county Berkshire.
John Chapman II entered his mark on 30th November 1774, so this represents a fine early example of his work. He had premises at 53 Old Street when this Beaker was made and moved to occupy workshops near Hester Bateman in May, 1777, at 133 Bunhill Row. We have to emphasise that in terms of quality, design and condition, this is one of the finest beakers which we have offered over the years.
