A rare & unusual George III Neo-Classical Wine/Water Ewer made in Sheffield in 1775 by Richard Morton & Company

The Jug is most beautifully modelled in the Neo-Classical style and stands on a square pedestal base, with four ball feet, which is decorated with a band of acanthus foliage. The vase shaped main body is decorated with unusual drapery swags and tassels, as well as bold acanthus spears. The section where the main body meets the neck displays a double beaded band and acanthus spears. The rim of the domed cover displays an applied beaded band and rises to a cast stylised artichoke finial. This fine piece has an ivory handle, which is attached to the main body with anthemion and acanthus mouldings and the front of the main body is engraved with a contemporary Crest. As you will appreciate, this is a most unusual design and some of the finest Neo-Classically inspired pieces were made in Sheffield. The Sheffield Assay Office was established in 1773, therefore this represents a rare early example from this centre of production.
