The Snuff Box is oval in form and plain in design, with a reeded band on the cover and the base. The cover is beautifully engraved with the Armorial of a Maiden Lady in her own right, surrounded by an elaborate cartouche of strapwork, scrolls, bluebell drops, brick work and acanthus scrolls. The base is engraved with a mirror cipher above the date 1717. The interior is finely gilded in the base and the interior of the cover is beautifully painted with a portrait miniature of King George I.
The Arms are those of a maiden Lady of the Plomstead family of Great Plumstead in the County of Norfolk. This very ancient family came over with the Conqueror in 1066. This box may well have been given as an affectionate token to a Lady member of the Plomstead family by the King. Boxes bearing the portrait of the first Hanoverian King are extremely rare.
