£2,450

The Spice Box is oval in form and is engraved on the cover with Cupid firing his bow into a heart with the Motto " Coup Sur Coup" engraved on a banner above.  This is all within a rural landscape with fields and dwellings to the right and left hand side.  The sides are decorated with a band of foliate motifs and each side an oval lug is engraved with a flower head.  The base is engraved with entwined pluming scrolls in an oval frame.  The inside of the cover is also engraved with the contemporary scratch engraved initials WA.  The base is marked with the maker's mark of T.T with a crown above, probably for Thomas Tucker or Thomas Townley, a maker who specialised in early boxes.     These Boxes would have been used to contain exotic spices or confits and are called "Squeezie" boxes as the side lugs need to be squeezed firmly to release the catch and then the cover springs up.  This piece is in excellent condition.
