The large, stepped, octagonal bases are decorated with a band of bat wing pattern. The bases rise to an octagonal platform with tapering fluted columns above. The top displays crenelated nozzles, each marked with a maker's mark. The bottom of each column displays a full set of hallmarks. The maker's mark of TD in script is illustrated and written up in "Silversmiths in Elizabethan & Stuart London" by David Mitchell, pages 517-8. It is attributed to Thomas Dymock. The Candlesticks are in excellent condition and have a fine colour.
Candlesticks from this early date are extremely rare and do not really exist in silver prior to the Restoration in 1660. A near identical pair, by the same maker, were sold at Woolley and Wallis on 24th April, 2018, making £ 62,000, plus the buyer's premium. A James II pair, with a similar feel to the design, are contained in the collection of York Minster and are on display in the Minster Undercroft.
