An important & substantial George II Covered Beer Jug made in London in 1746 by Jacob Marsh.

The Beer Jug stands on a circular, slightly domed, spreading foot which is decorated with reeded bands. The large main body has a baluster form and rises to an everted rim. The beautiful scroll handle is attached to the main body with ribbed mouldings and displays leaf capped decoration at the top. The unusual, partly hooded, spout displays lobing underneath and a raying Rococo shell. The clip over hinged, stepped, cover is decorated with reeding and displays an artichoke finial. The jug also displays an openwork cast corkscrew thumb piece. The Jug is fully marked in the foot and with the sterling mark on the top of the clip over cover. The quality and weight of this piece is exceptional and it has real presence on the table. This type of jug, with a cover, is very unusual, however it is a piece which Marsh produced , as it is the second we have offered over the years from his workshops. Jacob Marsh was a very fine silversmith who was apprenticed to both William Lukin and Gabriel Sleath, which would account for the fine quality of his work. He entered his first mark in 1744 and had workshops in Lombard Street when this wonderful Jug was made.
The front of the main body is engraved with a contemporary Armorial, surrounded by a Rococo shell detail and floral spray cartouche, also displaying a female mask above the Armorial. The engraving has been executed to the highest standard. The Armorial is that of the Tucker family of Woodland, co. Dorset and Tenterden, Kent. The crescent is the cadency mark for a third son. The family seem to have been prominent in Tenterden. This has to certainly be one of the finest Beer Jugs we have offered over the years and is unusual in that it has a cover to protect the contents in addition to a partly covered spout.
