The Candlesticks stand on a wide square base, with sunken well, and outer gadrooned border. The shaped stems have a circular and octagonal form which is decorated with horizontal gadrooned bands and cascading gadrooning at the base. The removable square nozzles are also decorated with gadrooning. All four are in excellent condition and are fully marked in the base.  The wells are engraved with a contemporary Armorial, and Crest and coronet on the other side.  The nozzles are each engraved with its number within the set.  The Crest and Coronet are those of Wilson and a Barony.  The arms are those of Wilson impaling Miller.  Henry William Wilson (1728-1796) married Mary Miller (1735-1772) on 20th May 1757. These Candlesticks were most probably purchased to celebrate their wedding.  Their eldest son was Robert (1761-1838) and in 1832 the title of Baron Berners, in abeyance since 1743, was brought out of abeyance for him.  He succeeded as 9th Baron.

John Cafe was a specialist candlestick maker, who was apprenticed to another candlestick specialist, James Gould.  He had workshops in Gutter Lane when these Candlesticks were made and died in October 1757, therefore these were some of the last pieces to leave his workshops.
