This very fine piece is cast and stands on four baluster pad feet. The main body has a beautiful waisted shape with heart shaped ends. The raised rim is chased with geometric designs, Rococo shells and foliate motifs on a matted ground. The leaf capped scroll handle is also chased with geometric designs, Rococo shells and foliate motifs on a matted ground. The leaf capped scroll handle is also chased with trellis work, a raying shell and a bluebell motif. This fine piece is in excellent condition and is very well marked on the underside. The centre of the Tray displays a contemporary family Crest. James Maitland was apprentice to the fine silversmith John Pero and had workshops on the corner of Suffolk Street when this piece was made.
