This very fine piece is cast and stands on four baluster pad feet. The main body has a beautiful waisted shape with heart shaped ends. The raised rim is chased with geometric designs, Rococo shells and foliate motifs on a matted ground. The leaf capped scroll handle is also chased with geometric designs, Rococo shells and foliate motifs on a matted ground. The leaf capped scroll handle is also chased with trellis work, a raying shell and a bluebell motif. This fine piece is in excellent condition and is very well marked on the underside. The centre of the Tray displays a contemporary family Crest. James Maitland was apprentice to the fine silversmith John Pero and had workshops on the corner of Suffolk Street when this piece was made. It is evident that he was also influenced by the work and decorative designs from the workshops of the great Paul De Lamerie.
