Obviously, the smaller size would indicate that it was for drinking something strong and the Mug has an attractive, plain, tapering "can" shaped form with spreading applied foot, slightly everted rim and horizontal girdle, which goes around the lower section of the main body.  These are all decorated with reeding, as is this "S" scroll side handle.  This piece is in excellent condition, is very well marked near the rim and is engraved on the base with the contemporary initials "S.B", these being of the original owner.  This piece also has a very fine colour.

The Elston family were major silversmiths in Exeter during this period.  Philip was apprentice to his brother, John Elston, in 1701 and took his own apprentice, Francis Trowbridge, on in 1716.  They were a family of ability and substance and Philip was Mayor of Exeter in 1743.  He was presumably dead by 1751.

Height: 2.9 inches.

Diameter of the base: 2.75 inches.

Weight: 3.5 oz.
