This very rare cup has slightly tapering sides and stands on a circular foot. This piece has two cast "S" scroll handles and is engraved with the contemporary initials EC on the base. The sides are beautifully decorated in the Chinoiserie manner and depict gesturing Chinese figures in traditional dress, swooping birds, stylised butterflies and exotic plant life. These Chinoiserie decorated pieces are extremely rare and are found occassionally on English silver from the last three decades of the Seventeenth century. This piece has a good colour, is in excellent condition and displays a crisp set of marks on the base. The maker's mark is illustrated on page 145 of Jackson's, "Silver & Gold Marks" and is possibly that of Timothy Ley, who specialised in the production of drinking vessels. The example of his work cited in Jackson is a communion flagon. The reign of James II only lasted for four years, so examples from this short period are very scarce.

Length, handle to handle: 5.45 inches, 13.63cm.
