The Spoon is modelled in the Trefid style, with a wide end engraved with two sets of prick dot initials above the date 1701. The wide bowl is beautifully decorated with crisp scroll and floral raised lacework, with a reeded rat tail down the centre. The front of the stem also displays beautiful lace work, also including scrolls and flower heads. This example is in excellent condition, has a good bowl and fine colour. The gauge of the spoon is also very fine. Lace back spoons from Chard are rare, especially of this outstanding quality. The stem is marked three times with the makers mark of Richard Sweet II, which is shown on page 135, Fig M147 of West Country Silver Spoons and Their Makers 1550-1750, by Timothy Kent.
