The Rattle has a baluster octagonal shaft, chased with Rococo designs including scrolls, shells, fruiting vines and floral and foliate sprays, all on a textured matted ground.  The lobed and corded bells are in two tiers, the bottom tier suspended from wirework loops.  The bottom displays a plain reeded band, to which the coral is attached and the top section a shaped suspensory ring.  The front of the whistle is engraved with the date 1755 and the reverse with two sets of initials, which may relate to the baby and the giver of the rattle.  The mouthpiece also shows the very clear maker's mark of Thomas Jeanes, illustrated on page 200 of Jackson's "Gold & Silver Marks".  This piece is in excellent condition, with extremely crisp chasing and no wear to the background matting.  Thomas Jeanes is a very scarce silversmith, who specialised in finely chased pieces.  He was apprenticed to Thomas Parr, 6th September 1739 on payment of £ 84 (one of the largest sums recorded for the period).  He was free 6th December, 1749, and his mark was entered in April 1750.  He had workshops in Lombard Street when this piece was made.

Length: 6.8 inches.
