This exceptional box is unmarked, but was almost certainly made in London circa 1720.  The box is oval in form, with a protruding hinge and plain base.  The interior is finely gilded and the cover is beautifully engraved with a contemporary mirror cipher surrounded by the most finely executed military cartouche we have seen depicting fierce dogs, battle horses, trumpets, horns, drums spears, axes and arrows in quivers.  These devices are surrounded by scale designs, scrolls and foliate strap work.  This was almost certainly executed by one of the finest engravers working in London during this period.  This piece is illustrated, with two other boxes, in "The Arthur Negus Guide to British Silver", written by Brand Inglis.  The box is contained within a later silk and velvet lined leather case.
